The AT Aluminum Alloy Pneumatic Actuator is a compact and reliable quarter-turn pneumatic actuator designed to automate the opening and closing of rotary valves. It uses compressed air to generate rotational torque and is widely used with ball valves, butterfly valves, plug valves and other quarter-turn valves.
Constructed with a lightweight yet durable aluminum alloy housing, the AT pneumatic actuator offers excellent corrosion resistance, low weight and a compact design. It is available in double-acting and single-acting configurations, including Fail-Open (FO) and Fail-Close (FC) options, to meet different process safety requirements.
The actuator can be equipped with valve positioners, solenoid valves, limit switches and air filter regulators for automated valve control and remote monitoring. With fast response, reliable operation and easy installation, the AT aluminum alloy pneumatic actuator is suitable for industrial automation applications in water treatment, chemical processing, petrochemical, food and beverage, HVAC and general process industries.
AT Aluminum Alloy Pneumatic Actuator – Working Principle
The AT Aluminum Alloy Pneumatic Actuator features a rack-and-pinion quarter-turn design. Compressed air drives the pistons, while the piston racks rotate the central output gear to provide 0–90° rotary operation for automatic valve opening and closing. AT actuators are available in Double-Acting (DA) and Single-Acting Spring-Return (SR) configurations.
Double-Acting Pneumatic Actuator (DA):After air preparation, compressed air enters one side of the actuator cylinder, pushing the piston toward the opposite side. The rack attached to the piston engages with the central output gear, converting linear piston movement into 90° rotary motion to open or close the valve.
When the air supply is switched, compressed air enters the opposite chamber, driving the piston in the reverse direction. The output gear rotates accordingly, causing the valve to close or open.
In the event of air supply failure, the double-acting actuator has no spring-return mechanism, so the actuator does not automatically return to a predetermined fail-safe position. If fail-in-place (FL) operation is required, an appropriate pneumatic lock-up valve / position-maintaining valve should be installed.
Single-Acting Pneumatic Actuator (SR, Spring Return):
Air Supply: Compressed air enters the actuator cylinder and overcomes the force of the preloaded springs, moving the pistons and driving the rack-and-pinion mechanism to rotate the output shaft and open or close the valve.
Air Failure: When the air supply is interrupted, the preloaded springs release their stored energy and automatically return the pistons to the initial position. This provides a predefined Fail-Open (FO) or Fail-Close (FC) valve position, depending on the actuator configuration.
A pneumatic actuator converts the energy of compressed air into mechanical motion, enabling the valve to open, close, or continuously modulate its position for reliable and automated valve control.
