The Side-Mounted Handwheel Pneumatic Control Valve combines intelligent pneumatic automation with reliable manual override capability. Driven by a pneumatic diaphragm actuator or piston actuator, the valve receives 4–20 mA signals from PLC/DCS control systems for accurate and continuous adjustment of flow, pressure and other process parameters.

The integrated side-mounted manual handwheel actuator provides immediate manual control during air failure, control system faults, installation commissioning or routine maintenance. This compact and flexible design improves system reliability while reducing installation limitations in areas where vertical space is restricted.

Working Principle of Pneumatic Control Valve with Side-Mounted Handwheel Override
Automatic Operation Mode (Normal Process Operation):During normal operation, the side-mounted handwheel is switched to the AUTO position, allowing the handwheel mechanism to disengage from the valve stem transmission system. The 4–20 mA control signal from the DCS/PLC system is transmitted to the valve positioner, which regulates the pneumatic actuator movement and drives the valve plug to continuously adjust the valve opening. In this mode, the handwheel remains idle and does not interfere with automatic pneumatic control, ensuring precise and stable process regulation.

Manual Emergency Operation Mode (Air Failure / Instrument Fault / Maintenance):When the pneumatic supply is interrupted, the valve positioner fails, or the actuator diaphragm is damaged, the automatic mode can be locked and the valve can be operated manually by rotating the side-mounted handwheel override mechanism.

  • Clockwise rotation: The lever mechanism pushes the valve stem downward, reducing the valve opening or closing the valve completely.
  • Counterclockwise rotation: The lever mechanism lifts the valve stem upward, increasing the valve opening or fully opening the valve.

The valve opening can be manually positioned at any intermediate point between 0–100% travel, allowing temporary process operation and maintaining system continuity during emergency conditions. After the fault is resolved, the handwheel can be returned to the AUTO position to restore automatic pneumatic control.

Adjustable Travel Limiting Function:The side-mounted handwheel provides bidirectional travel limit adjustment, offering advantages over traditional top-mounted handwheel designs that typically provide only single-direction limitation. The mechanism allows operators to set both the maximum and minimum valve opening positions, preventing excessive opening or closing beyond process requirements.

This function helps maintain a stable minimum flow rate, protects downstream equipment and ensures reliable operation in process applications requiring constant lower flow limits or restricted operating ranges.
