Also known as vane rotary actuator and single-vane sector pneumatic actuator, the sector pneumatic cylinder is a direct-drive quarter-turn pneumatic device with standard 90° rotary output. As a pistonless double-acting pneumatic actuator, it is widely applied to ball valves, butterfly valves, plug valves, air volume control dampers, as well as indexing and flipping operations of automated tooling.
Equipped with a fixed partition and integrated vane inside the housing, the vane separates the inner cavity into two independent sector air chambers. There is only one moving assembly consisting of the vane and output shaft. Without intermediate transmission structures such as gears, racks, pinions or scotch-yoke mechanisms, compressed air acts directly on the vane surface to generate rotary torque and drive the output shaft.
Working Principle of Sector Pneumatic Cylinder
When compressed air enters chamber E via port A, it pushes vane D toward side B. Air inside chamber F exhausts through port B. Sustained air pressure at port A prevents air leakage and maintains cylinder sealing, driving output shaft C to rotate counterclockwise.
On the contrary, when compressed air enters chamber F via port B, it pushes vane D toward side A. Air inside chamber E exhausts through port A. Continuous air pressure at port B avoids compressed air leakage on the vane shaft and ensures sealing, driving output shaft C to rotate clockwise.
A pneumatic actuator converts the energy of compressed air into mechanical motion, enabling the valve to open, close, or continuously modulate its position for reliable and automated valve control. XLXV Vane-Type Rotary Pneumatic Actuator – Key Features
No Rotary Shaft Seal Required:O-rings are designed for static sealing rather than dynamic rotary applications. Most rotary actuators on the market adopt O-rings for shaft sealing, which leads to high friction, torque loss and frequent air leakage.
Equipped with bidirectional lip seals, XLXV sector cylinder prevents compressed air from reaching the rotary shaft, so an extra shaft seal is unnecessary.
Bidirectional Lip Seal with Continuous Lubrication:When compressed air fills the cylinder chamber, the lip seal expands outward under pressure to achieve reliable sealing.
An oil retention groove is formed between dual lip seals. Grease stored inside the groove spreads evenly over the cylinder inner wall during vane rotation. Continuous lubrication reduces friction, ensures smooth movement, minimizes seal wear, improves output torque and extends service life.
Metal-to-Metal Limit Bolts:Limit bolts directly contact metal surfaces to maintain stable output rotation angle and enable precise angular adjustment.
