The Pneumatic Control Valve with Top-Mounted Handwheel Override combines automatic pneumatic modulation with reliable manual emergency operation. Under normal operating conditions, the handwheel mechanism is disengaged from the actuator, allowing the valve to receive 4–20 mA DCS/PLC control signals and perform automatic flow, pressure and process regulation without manual interference.
When air supply failure, instrument malfunction or maintenance requirements occur, the integrated top-mounted manual handwheel override system provides direct mechanical control of the valve stem. Operators can manually adjust the valve position from fully closed to fully open, maintaining temporary process operation and improving system reliability.
Designed for industrial applications requiring automatic control with manual backup capability, this pneumatic modulating control valve with handwheel override is widely used in steam systems, chemical processing, power plants, HVAC, petrochemical industries and industrial automation applications.
Working Principle of Pneumatic Control Valve with Top-Mounted Handwheel Override
Automatic Operation Mode (Normal Operating Condition):During normal automatic operation, the clutch locking mechanism is released, allowing the threaded stem to move upward and disengage from the actuator stem plate. The handwheel mechanism is completely separated from the pneumatic actuator transmission system. The 4–20 mA control signal from the DCS/PLC system drives the pneumatic actuator to move freely and automatically adjust the valve position. In this mode, the handwheel remains stationary and does not rotate with the actuator, ensuring accurate automatic regulation without interference.
Manual Emergency Operation Mode (Air Failure / Instrument Fault / Maintenance):When the pneumatic supply is interrupted, the control system fails, or maintenance operation is required, the clutch mechanism can be engaged to connect the handwheel drive system with the valve stem. By tightening the clutch structure, the lower end of the threaded stem presses against the actuator diaphragm plate or valve stem, enabling manual valve operation.
The valve can be manually positioned at any opening between 0–100% travel, allowing temporary process operation and maintaining system continuity during emergency conditions.
Travel Limiting Function:The traditional top-mounted handwheel design generally provides only one-way travel limitation. It can be used to set the maximum opening position and prevent the valve from exceeding the full-open limit. However, it usually cannot independently adjust the minimum closing position, which limits flexibility in applications requiring precise lower flow control.
